Introduction Silk Painting Workshop

This workshop is an introduction to silk painting using dyes and resists. Over the course of 2 days, students will paint three to four scarves or wall hangings. No art experience is necessary. First, students will learn about dyes and how they combine on the silk. Students will also be introduced to basic color theories working with magenta, yellow, blue, and black pigment. The process entails mixing color both off and on the silk, overlay color, and create texture with water, alcohol and several kinds of salt. Students will start with an abstract design, with dye flowing freely on the silk. Then, students will learn how to set the color so that it is permanent. In class we will use a dyeset concentrate, but we will also discuss alternative methods of setting the dye. All materials will be provided: dyes, salts, brushes, gloves, silk, stretchers, resist, and hand cleaner. Students should wear comfortable art clothes which might be exposed to dye and comfortable shoes so that you can stand or sit while painting. Debra currently resides in Hawaii, and pursues silk painting as her late-in-life career. Her silk motifs are largely drawn from nature and she often uses tropical themes such as hibiscus, plumeria, banana leaf and monstera in her work. She teaches classes in her studio in Kailua-Kona and sells her hand painted silks independently. Learn more about Debra here.
