Identity Retablos: Exploring Identity Through Mexican Folk Art

June 27

6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m

$25

Join Sarah May, a Kimball Art Center exhibiting artist featured "Historias de Ayer y Hoy", to learn about Retablos and Ex-votos, which are frames that enclose revered objects behind an altar, and religious offerings of gratitude and devotion within Mexican Folk Art, similar to Dia de Los Muertos Shrines honoring the deceased. Sarah will give a brief history and examples of Retablos and Ex-votos and how they inspired her to create her series, "Identity Retablos". Participants will then create their own Retablo/Ex-Voto, or personal shrine to explore aspects of their identity and to share their story. Kimball Art Center will provide boxes and basic craft materials for each participant. Participants are encouraged to bring materials, found and personal objects to put in their Retablos.
